CSU AI Wind Compensation

Summary

AI in Arma Reforger doesn't account for wind. This mod makes AI estimate wind and compensate for its effect on their shots, with accuracy varying by soldier.

Description

Summary

AI in Arma Reforger does not account for wind when aiming. At range, crosswind causes their shots to consistently drift to one side of the target. This mod makes AI estimate the wind and compensate for it, with the accuracy of that estimate varying by soldier.

Description

AI already accounts for range and target movement when firing, but wind is not part of their aiming calculation. In a crosswind, their rounds consistently land to one side of the target, and they make no correction.

This mod adds wind compensation to AI aiming.

Each AI estimates the current wind and adjusts their aim accordingly. They are not given the actual wind value; they have to estimate it. Most soldiers tend to underestimate the wind, and their estimates vary over time. Snipers are generally more accurate, while average riflemen are less so. Every soldier attempts to compensate for wind.

Wind-reading ability is divided by role using the same role groupings the game already uses to distribute soldiers. This is simply a practical way to assign different levels of ability within the AI, not a statement that one role is inherently a better shot or more skilled soldier than another. An officer is not automatically a better marksman than a rifleman, for example.

- Low: Riflemen, gunners, grenadiers, AT
- Medium: Team leaders, squad leaders, senior riflemen, officers
- High: Marksmen, snipers, spotters, special forces

Each individual AI also receives a permanent personal ability value. The groups overlap, so a rifleman can be better at reading wind than his team leader, while an occasional marksman or sniper may be relatively poor at it. There is no strict skill hierarchy.

AI re-evaluate the wind approximately every 0.75 seconds rather than before every shot. This keeps rounds fired in the same burst subject to roughly the same correction instead of causing them to scatter due to constantly changing estimates.

Even the worst estimate removes roughly 40% of the wind drift. AI will not overcorrect beyond approximately 160% of the required compensation, so no AI is made worse off than it would be without wind compensation.

Grenades

40mm grenades are also affected. Because they travel much more slowly and remain in the air for several seconds, wind can move them several metres. Grenadiers now compensate for this drift.

Rockets

Rocket launchers are not supported. Rockets continue accelerating under motor power for several seconds after launch, so their flight characteristics are fundamentally different from the ballistic model used by this mod.

Performance

Testing the same firefight with the mod enabled and disabled showed no measurable difference in frame time, with approximately two dozen AI actively engaging each other.

Ammunition Compatibility

The mod does not modify ammunition.

Each projectile's drag and muzzle velocity are read from its existing configuration, which is the same data the game uses for its flight simulation. Wind compensation therefore adapts to the actual ballistic properties of each round.

This means ammunition from other mods works automatically without requiring compatibility patches. If another mod gives a projectile unusual or incorrect ballistic properties, this mod will still compensate based on how that projectile actually behaves in flight.

Compatibility

- Scripts only
- No dependencies
- No prefab overrides
- No config overrides
- No ammunition or weapon modifications
- Works in Singleplayer, Game Master, and Dedicated Servers
- Optional JSON settings allow wind compensation to be scaled or disabled
