Summary
Shout at the AI and they weigh it up. Those who give in can be restrained,
marched, driven back to base and questioned. Trust and fear decide what any
character in the game will tell you.
Description
MILSIM CREATOR FRAMEWORK - AI MODULE
Taking somebody alive, and talking to them afterwards. Nothing has to be placed
to switch the module on - it attaches itself to whatever game mode your mission
uses, and it reaches every character in the game, vanilla or modded, rather
than only MCF's own.
SHOUTING AND GIVING UP
- A key (H) shouts at whoever you are pointing at, with a voice line and a
raised fist
- What it is worth depends on the distance, on whether your rifle is up, and on
how tightly you are facing the man himself rather than the room
- Everyone in earshot weighs it. The man you singled out takes the most, a
bystander beside him takes less, a shout to the room is shared out
- Seeing somebody near him killed, being hit himself, losing his leader, being
left alone, being shot at - each wears his nerve down on its own terms
- Below one threshold he puts his hands up. Below another he goes to his knees.
Above a third he will not be talked down at all
- Faces follow: a different expression for on his knees, hands up, losing his
nerve, unmoved, and for seeing something good or bad
WHAT YOU DO WITH HIM
- Restrain him from behind - his wrists go back one at a time and a tie appears
- Walk him: come with me, walk in front of me, or wait here. Somebody whose
hands are tied keeps them tied while he walks
- Put him in the back of a vehicle and take him out again. Cargo seats only,
and he keeps his hands behind his back in the seat - so a prisoner can be
driven back to base instead of only as far as he can walk
- Let him go
CONVERSATIONS
- Any character can be given a conversation, and a second one for after he has
been subdued
- Trust and fear are numbers on the person. A reply can require a minimum trust
or a maximum fear, so a frightened man tells you nothing and a man who has no
reason to like you keeps the useful answers to himself
- Replies can set flags and read them, so a conversation remembers what was
already said
- Authored live in Game Master: write the lines, the replies, what each one
requires and what it changes, on one screen
- Nine worked examples ship with it - a shopkeeper, a farmer, a doctor, a
priest, a barman, a village elder and others - to open and take apart
- A line can name things the person actually is: his trade, where he lives,
what he is doing, his age, or a relative by kind. Write {tie:brother} and the
brother's name appears, or the fallback you wrote if he has not got one
PEOPLE
- Villagers carry a record: a name, a trade, a house, a workplace, people they
are related to
- Every person can be tuned on their own - how much fight is in them, how fast
their nerve returns, how hard things press them - or given one of eight
presets
- Six mission-wide presets set every number at once, as a place to start
arguing from rather than a mode
GAME MASTER SETTINGS
Around forty, all live: the thresholds for hands up and kneeling, how far a
levelled rifle is felt and how narrowly it has to be aimed, how far a shout
carries and what it is worth, what each thing that wears a man down costs, how
much of the difference between two people is the village and how much is the
man, how strongly faces show and how long for. Four overall multipliers scale
the lot. Each of shouting, surrendering and conversations can be switched off
on its own.
ALPHA: THE LIVING VILLAGE
There is a layer that gives villagers a house, a workplace and a day, and walks
them through it. It ships SWITCHED OFF and it is labelled alpha in the Game
Master panel, because it does not look right yet: people reach for things they
then do nothing with, and the pauses between one task and the next are not
smooth. Nothing in it breaks a mission. It is off because it is not finished,
not because it is dangerous. Turn it on if you want to see where it is going.
KNOWN LIMITS, SAID PLAINLY
- Coming out of the restrained pose is a cut. The arms snap forward rather than
coming down.
- There is no captor-side animation. You tie somebody up and your own hands do
nothing.
- There is no kneeling-with-hands-behind-the-head pose. Kneeling and hands up
are separate.
- The living village layer is alpha and ships off. See above.
- This is the first release of this module onto a dedicated server. The
replication was gone over line by line and corrected in several places, and
all forty-one automated checks pass - but checks run on one machine, and the
faults this class of code has are the ones that only appear when a second
player is watching. Tell us what you see.
