Operation Boneyards

Merak Island has hosted a NATO training facility on its western cape for the better part of a decade, operating under a lease agreed with the mainland government. In recent years that arrangement has come under increasing local opposition, culminating in the emergence of the Merak Liberation Movement, an organised and locally supported insurgent group opposed to the continued NATO presence on the island.

Over the past eighteen months MLM activity has escalated from protest to armed action, with repeated probing attacks against the training facility perimeter and outlying range complexes. NATO assessment identified the town of Nahrin as the MLM's primary stronghold in the north and the origin point for these attacks.
