Summary
Tech demo (alpha), formerly PWHS Layered Weapon Handling. Physical weapon handling: recoil from the firing impulse, whole-body response, weapons weighed from geometry, walking sway.
Description
GRASS — Gun Rides A Simulated Skeleton.
Formerly "PWHS Layered Weapon Handling"; renamed in 0.6.0, same entry.
Tech demo, early alpha. Made to test the simulation, not for regular play or servers. Client-side only; AI is unaffected.
Weapon handling is replaced with a physical model of the body holding the weapon. Each weapon is weighed from its own geometry, attachments included, so behaviour follows from mass and inertia instead of per-weapon values.
Features
- Recoil derived from the firing impulse and absorbed by the shoulder, with a short delay before the muscles respond.
- The shot moves the whole body. The climb stays on the sights and is not returned automatically; prone reduces it.
- Weapon roll depends on the grip.
- Sustained fire loosens the hold.
- Recoil reaches the head; a helmet slows it.
- Delayed, weighted sway while walking. Hip fire is imprecise; aiming down sights settles it.
- Underbarrel launchers push the muzzle down.
- Gloves reduce grip strength.
- HUD: aim ring, hand markers, stance and stamina bars, and indicators for a blocked muzzle, vegetation, ground surface and unsupported footing. All optional.
- Settings tab (GRASS): HUD, opacity, view options, body mass and strength; the simulation scales with the last two. Servers can lock the settings.
- Vanilla recoil is kept on handguns, launchers, and weapons the mod cannot measure or move.
Hands: the engine offers no way to keep the hands attached to a recoiling weapon. In first person the body is hidden while a long weapon is held and markers show hand positions; handguns keep the body and shadow. Third-person appearance is unchanged.
Server admins: to lock settings for all players, create GRASS_Server.conf in the server profile folder with lock=1 and optional key=value lines (hud, ringVisible, dashWords, dashRow, spineLamp, headRollCut, camHeadLag, bodyMass, benchPress), then restart. Omitted keys use mod defaults
