Summary
FIRST TEST RELEASE
This is the first release of a mod that introduces mouse gesture based shifting for manual vehicles, while leaving vanilla driving for vehicles that are automatic like the HMMWV.
Description
FIRST TEST RELEASE - PER VEHICLE VISUAL SHIFT PATTERNS NOT IMPLEMENTED - TEST CIV VEHICLES - URAL 5 SPEED PATTERN DOES NOT EXIST YET - NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GEAR PATTERNS CONFIGURED YET
Bindable clutch key (Default L-CTRL), hold the button and move your mouse to move between gears.
Release the clutch in the right location and the vehicle shifts to that gear.
Miss the gear and the shifter snaps down to neutral, aligned with the gear you missed, forcing you to try again.
Allows shifting directly FROM any gear TO any gear, regardless of whether it is the smart choice.
Most things are customizable, to as much a point as I could figure out how to make it.
Shifting patterns can be assigned per vehicle or per vehicle class depending on use of full or partial naming convention.
Shifter knob movement/drag speed can be modified to represent ease/difficulty of shifting per vehicle.
Height, width, positioning and sweet spot for gear channels per shifting pattern. (Theoretically you could make a maze if you wanted to, I suppose)
Leave a vehicle off the config list and it runs as vanilla.
Custom imageset option and component for adding to modded vehicles
What is missing/off?
No shifting animation.
Clutch is binary, not analog, so I can't introduce a 'true' clutch. Or at least, I don't know how the heck to do it. (I don't think I am fixing this one)
Suddenly changing gear from 4th to reverse DOESN'T rip your transmission apart, sadly. The damage system seems somewhat limited for redlining, downshifting too far, etc. Not sure what I can do here.
What next?
Make sure controllers work well with the system. I do not have a controller with me where I am currently and cannot test yet, hopefully I can get that working easily.
Beyond that, I am fairly happy with the functionality and will likely not change much in the immediate future, beyond trying to fix any bugs that pop up and tweaking the feel of the different gearboxes.
Maybe but doubtful:
See if I can get partial animation(s) to tie the mouse shifting with character shifting
If it doesn't already work, figure out a way to get sim shifters to work in game. (Does this already work? Has anyone done this? Any of the rally missions' folks...? Maybe...?)
Slight randomization between vehicles so that even amongst the same make and model different cars would have mildly varied sweet spots, shifter speed, etc to add personality to individual cars for game modes like Freedom Fighters and Overthrow.
Further tweaks to handling and other aspects to bring the game closer to a sim? May be unnecessary as there are other modders working this side of things
Disclaimer: I am not a professional, nor even a talented amateur. I am a bare novice that is probably reaching a bit too far. This is my first mod and was hours and hours of squinting at the modding bootcamp videos, the wiki, and asking Gemeni why nothing I was doing was working.
License: Arma Public License requirements stand. Beyond that, I really don't care what you do with this. Honestly if someone can take this base and make it better I would be ecstatic. I just ask that you give me any feedback so I can improve and keep me updated on discord in the Gestural Shift Gearbox entry or directly (discord: silverscorpion). If it makes sense, I can also just add it to the main mod and give credit. Doesn't bother me any. I just want my sim to be sim-ier.
