*MAS 49-56*
The MAS 49/56 semi-automatic rifle is a modernized evolution of the MAS 49, adopted by the French Army to meet the needs of modern combat revealed during the conflicts in Indochina and Algeria. Produced by the Manufacture d'armes de Saint-Étienne, this weapon forged a solid reputation for reliability, robustness, and accuracy in harsh environments. Chambered for the 7.5x54mm cartridge, it is fed by a ten-round detachable magazine.
Its operating mechanism is based on a direct gas impingement system, a simple design later popularized by the American M16 rifle. Compared to its predecessor, the MAS 49/56 is shorter and lighter, improving its maneuverability for airborne and mechanized troops. Engineers also added a muzzle brake that doubled as a launcher for standard 22mm NATO rifle grenades, as well as a bayonet. The MAS 49/56 served as the standard service rifle for the French infantry until its gradual replacement by the FAMAS starting in the late 1970s.
*MAT-49*
The MAT-49 is an iconic submachine gun developed by the Manufacture Nationale d'Armes de Tulle and adopted by the French Army in 1949. Designed to be simple, robust, and economical to produce, it is primarily made from stamped sheet metal. This weapon saw extensive use during the First Indochina War and the Algerian War, where it was particularly valued by paratroopers and mechanized units for its compactness and firepower.
Chambered in 9mm Parabellum, the MAT-49 operates in fully automatic mode with a blowback action. One of its most distinctive features is its magazine well, which can be pivoted forward, serving both as a safety and as a way to make the weapon more compact for transport. It is also equipped with a retractable wire stock and a grip safety that must be depressed to allow firing. Just like the MAS 49/56, the MAT-49 was gradually phased out of service and replaced by the FAMAS.
