Summary
The Apertu Islands began in 2024 as a landlocked map inspired by my hometown. Over time, it evolved into the island archipelago it is today.
Description
The Apertu Islands are a fictional temperate-maritime archipelago built for Arma Reforger. The current world occupies an approximately 8 × 8 km map and combines rugged coasts, forested ridges, rolling inland terrain, mountain basins, narrow straits, civilian settlements, industrial traces, two major airfields, two named ports, and a finite network of road crossings between island groups. Its geography naturally produces short operational distances but sharp changes in visibility, elevation, access, and tactical control.
The islands' history is layered rather than singular. Ancient seafaring settlement and coastal subsistence gave way to early twentieth-century extraction and port building, wartime fortification, intense Cold War militarization, post-1991 decline, smuggling, and renewed proxy conflict. Those periods remain visible in the landscape: old roads and industrial corridors coexist with airfields, radar positions, hardened sites, isolated communities, and strategic ports.
For scenario design, the archipelago functions as a compact operational system. Airports support rapid reinforcement; ports provide heavy logistics and maritime access; high ground dominates observation and communications; settlements control junctions and shelter civilian life; and the limited crossings turn individual bridges, causeways, passes, and shoreline approaches into decisive objectives.
