Summary
Snake Island (also known as Zmiinyi Island) is a Ukrainian island located in the Black Sea, with an important role in delimiting Ukrainian territorial waters.
Description
In the 2022 Russian Invasion, the island (initially guarded by Ukrainian Border Guards) was captured by the Russian Navy.
In early May, Ukrainian Special Forces of the SBU Alpha Group attempted to liberate Snake Island from the occupiers, but decided to retreat after taking multiple casualties.
In the following month, the island instead became target of increasingly frequent Ukrainian strikes.
After the islands occupation had become more and more untenable, the Russians withdrew from the island in late June.
