Summary
Marken (also known as Mereke) is a former island, now connected to the mainland by a causeway built in 1957, transforming it into a peninsula in the Markermeer lake.
Description
It is located in the municipality of Waterland in the Dutch province of North Holland.
Until 1991, Marken was an independent municipality. That year, its administration was integrated into the larger Waterland municipality.
For over a century, this former fishing village has been a popular tourist destination, celebrated for its unique cultural heritage and picturesque charm. Marken's traditional clothing, once an iconic feature of Dutch folklore, has drawn visitors from around the world. The village is also famous for its characteristic wooden houses, many of which are built on stilts to protect against flooding. Even older are the "werven" – man-made mounds that provided elevated living spaces long before modern flood management.
